DURBAN – Police in Phoenix are continuing with investigation into an apparent hit and run incident in which a 26-year-old woman died after she was hit by a vehicle which failed to stop on Phoenix Highway in the early hours of Saturday, 17 August 2024. The victim was allegedly knocked down by a police vehicle. The driver of the vehicle failed to stop at the accident scene, however it was reported that there was a person who went to the accident scene to pick up a front registration plate which fell off from the vehicle during the accident. Shortly after a case of culpable homicide was registered at Phoenix police station, a Sergeant who was the last person to be in possession of the state vehicle in question went to the same police station to open a case of theft of a motor vehicle. The vehicle was later found abandoned at the sugarcane fields on Saturday morning. On Monday, 19 August 2024, morning police received reports that the 48-year-old police Sergeant who was implicated in the hit and run incident had taken his own life. Circumstances surrounding the apparent suicide incident form part of police investigations. Ends
