Media Statement WESTERN CAPE – An intelligence driven operation in Mitchells Plain aimed against the spreading of counterfeit and illicit goods that pose a threat to the economy of this country, led to the arrest of a suspect dealing in counterfeit and illicit goods and to the confiscation of mentioned goods. Police members attached to the National and Provincial Counterfeit and Illicit goods unit led the integrated operation on Monday 01 July 2024. The team pursued information at their disposal which led them to a local business hub in Mitchells Plain where they ensued with a search. They confiscated counterfeit and illicit goods ranging from expired food products, vape products and cigarettes as well as an undisclosed amount of cash. These products pose a health risk to communities and have a negative impact on registered businesses in the area. The members detained a 43-year-old man on a charge of dealing in counterfeit and illicit goods. The value of the counterfeit goods are estimated at an amount of R200 000-00.
The suspect is expected to make a court appearance in the Mitchells Plain Magistrates’ court once charged.
