Media Statement GOEDEMOED – The Provincial Commissioner of the police in the Free State, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane, commends the exceptional dedication and teamwork demonstrated by members in the tragic murder of a young child. On 8 December 2024, a breakthrough was made when information from a 21-year-old female suspect detained for possession of suspected stolen property linked to a farm murder case. During her detention, the suspect made a harrowing confession, revealing her involvement in the death of her sister’s child. The suspect disclosed that on Friday, 6 December 2024, she and her boyfriend had taken the child from Reddersburg to Goedemoed. During their journey, the boyfriend brutally assaulted the child multiple times, both physically and by kicking him. After spending the night at a nearby farm, the assaults continued the following morning, leaving the child unconscious. The pair then wrapped the child in a blue curtain and abandoned him at a farm in the Goedemoed district. Acting promptly on the suspect’s directions, the Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) members located the scene, where the child’s body was discovered wrapped in a curtain. The relevant role players, including Emergency Medical Services (EMS), the Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC), Goedemoed Detectives, and Forensic Pathology Services, were summoned to the scene. The 2-year-old boy was confirmed deceased, and preliminary examinations revealed extensive bruising across his upper and lower body. Through further investigation, the biological mother of the deceased child was traced to Reddersburg. The suspect, who was already facing charges of possession of stolen property, will now face additional charges of murder. The Provincial Commissioner lauds the relentless efforts of all involved, including the Smithfield CIC, MDOC, Anti-Gang Unit, and supporting teams. “This case highlights the commitment and professionalism of SAPS members in their pursuit of justice for the most vulnerable members of our society,” said the Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Motswenyane.
