Media Statement NELSPRUIT – The Police have launched a manhunt for a rape suspect following an incident in which a 17-year-old girl was allegedly raped whilst the suspect attempted to rape her 20-year-old cousin in Vosman on Thursday, 28 March 2024. The matter was reported to the Police and is being investigated by the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FSC) Unit. Preliminary investigation by the Police indicates that the suspect, who was driving a grey Hyundai i10, reportedly lured the two girls by buying them beverages and attended a party at the neighbour’s house. The suspect somehow convinced the two females to leave the party after which he took them to a secluded place where he allegedly raped one of the girls, aged 17. It was during this period when the suspect attempted to rape the second victim, aged 20 however, the victim managed to fight off the suspect by attacking him with a spanner. Both victims managed to escape and sought help. A rape case and an attempted rape case were opened. No one has been arrested so far and Police are urging anyone with information that may assist in apprehending the suspect to call the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111 or send information via MySAPS App. All received information will be treated as confidential and callers may opt to remain anonymous. The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, has strongly condemned the incident whilst cautioning young girls about cruel men that target them and pretend to be caring yet having evil intentions. “We hope the investigation team will ensure that the perpetrator is swiftly brought to book and face the full might of the law for his deeds,” said the General.
