Police in Modimolle, Limpopo, have launched a manhunt following the fatal shooting of a female correctional services officer on Tuesday morning.
According to police, the incident occurred at approximately 06:30 along Nelson Mandela Road while the victim was walking from her rented room to her workplace at the Modimolle Correctional Centre.
It is alleged that the woman was approached by an unknown male suspect before an altercation broke out between the two.
During the confrontation, the suspect allegedly shot the victim twice in the upper body.
The correctional officer, whose identity has been withheld as investigations continue, was declared dead at the scene.
Police said the suspect fled the scene on foot immediately after the shooting and has not yet been arrested.
The motive for the killing remains unknown at this stage.
Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has instructed specialised police units to intensify the search for the suspect.
