Media Statement WESTERN CAPE – In efforts to deal decisively with the crimes of extortion and the possession of prohibited firearms and ammunition, police members in the Western Cape detained ten suspects in isolated cases for serious and violent crimes. Wynberg police conducted a stop and search operation in their precinct on Saturday, 20 July 2024, when they saw a suspicious male roaming the area. When they approached the man, he fled with the police members in pursuit. They apprehended the man in Broad Road, searched him and in the process confiscated a 9mm pistol with ammunition and detained the adult male on a charge of possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition. In an unrelated intervention, police members of the Provincial Counterfeit and Illicit goods Task Team led an integrated operation in Strand on Sunday 21 July 2024. The purpose of the operation was clearly identified to attend to extortion related incidents that is a high priority for the South African Police Services in the Western Cape. By virtue of the meticulous investigation conducted by seasoned detectives, eight suspects were detained for questioning on a charge of extortion. Meanwhile, police members attached to Public Order Police responded to information pertaining to a person in possession of a firearm on Sunday, 21 July 2024. As the patrol vehicle entered Qumbu Road, the members saw a man who fitted the description. They searched the man and confiscated a 9mm pistol with ammunition found in his possession. They arrested the 35-year-old man on a charge of possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition. Once charged the suspects are expected to make their respective court appearances in the Wynberg, Strand and Athlone Magistrates courts on the mentioned charges. End
