Media Statement NELSPRUIT – The management of the Police in Mpumalanga, under the leadership of the Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, has learned with great concern about the misconception being perpetuated in various media platforms suggesting that the Police in Mpumalanga are taking sides when it comes to Domestic Violence, particularly when it involves violence perpetuated against men. This perception has been fueled by a video circulating on social media in which a male individual claims that he was not assisted by the Police after alleging that he was stabbed by his female friend. After conducting an internal probe into the matter, it was discovered that certain key details were omitted from the narrative presented in the video. During his arrest recently, the individual in question refused to lay charges against the female suspect, despite being adviced to do so by the Investigation Officer, regardless that the stabbing occurred sometime back, Police are determined to investigate the matter if the man take a decision to lay a charge. It is even more concerning that the man refused to open a case though the Investigation Officer had motivated him to do so as he had just arrested another female suspect for similar offences earlier that day. The SAPS would like to clarify that we do not take sides when it comes to incidents of Domestic Violence. We are committed to upholding the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa and abide by the SAPS Code of Conduct, which requires us to act impartially, courteously, honestly, respectfully, transparently, and in an accountable manner. We urge members of the public not to hesitate in seeking clarification if they are unsure about certain actions or conduct displayed by members of the Police. It is important to engage in dialogue and resolve misunderstandings rather than perpetuate misconceptions.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, reassures the public that the SAPS is committed to uphold the rights of every individual and will continue to serve with integrity and professionalism.
