NELSPRUIT – The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi has deployed a number of police following community violence that erupted yesterday, 28 November 2024 in Delmas. The violence was sparked after community members learned about the untimely death of a 6-year-old victim who allegedly consumed biscuits bought from the local foreign owned spaza shop. According to information, the victim allegedly came home and complained about stomach pains. His parents observed that the victim had white foam around his mouth. It is alleged that the victim reported that he ate some biscuits bought from a local spaza shop. Thereafter, he was rushed to hospital and unfortunately lost his life. As a result, some community members went on rampage and torched two spaza shops belonging to foreign nationals. The Police has since heightened visibility in the area meanwhile two suspects, both aged 30 were arrested for public violence yesterday afternoon. The suspects are expected to appear at the Delmas Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 02 December 2024. The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi has called for calm amongst community members. “We are taking these allegations very seriously. We would like community members to allow authorities to conduct their investigation so that justice is served for the victim and get closure for the family,” appealed the General. Ends
