Media Statement CAPE TOWN – Persistence from members attached to the Anti Economic Crime Task Team and Provincial Counterfeit and Illicit Goods Policing Team, through targeted crime combatting operations, paid off when they arrested a 56-year-old man for the possession of crayfish tails, worth a substantial amount of cash on the black market. On Wednesday, 09 April 2025 at approximately 05:00 the members operationalised information of drugs activities taking place at an identified premises in Charlesville, Bishop Lavis. Upon arrival at the identified premises, the members conducted a search which was extended to a white Toyota LDV, leading to the discovery of a substantial quantity of crayfish tails, wrapped in plastic bags, on the back of the vehicle. The discovery was seized and a 56-year-old male was subsequently arrested for the unlawful possession of living marine (crayfish tails). The suspect was detained and will make his first court appearance in the Bishop Lavis Magistrates’ court, once charged. The estimated value of the discovery is yet to be determined. In addition, members received and followed up information of a wanted suspect who was in possession of a firearm at a premise situated in Langa. They accosted the identified premises and found the 34-year-old male suspect in possession of an illegal firearm. Further investigation led to the discovery of 287 mandrax tablets which was found on the suspect. He faces charges related to the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition as well as the possession of drugs. The suspect was detained and is due to appear in the Bishop Lavis magistrates’ court, once charged. Ends
