Media Statement CAPE TOWN – A total of seven suspects are expected to appear in court following their arrest on Tuesday 23 July 2024, for the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition as well as for the possession of a hijacked vehicle in isolated incidents. Delft police members were busy with patrols, when they responded to information indicating that ammunition were stored at a residence in their policing precinct. The members entered the house near the corners of Robert Sobukwe and Stellenbosch Arterial Drive and searched the entire premises. Their persistence was rewarded when they recovered 144 various assorted rounds of ammunition hidden inside the house. They arrested an adult male for the unlawful possession of ammunition. In an unrelated intervention, Philippi police conducted patrols in the gang infested areas when they responded to a complaint of a hijacked Nissan SUV driving in their direction. Upon approaching the corners of Olieboom and Varkensvlei Road, they spotted the mentioned motor vehicle and instructed the driver to stop. The suspects jumped out and fled to a nearby VW Polo parked near to the intersection, which is believed to have been the getaway vehicle. The police members intercepted the VW Polo with six occupants and upon a search, an unlicensed firearm and ammunition were seized. The suspects were arrested on the spot for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition as well as for the possession of a hijacked vehicle. The suspects are expected to make their respective court appearances in the Bellville and Athlone Magistrate’s courts on the mentioned charges. Ends
