Media Statement WESTERN CAPE – Committed to rid the streets of prohibited firearms, ammunition and drugs, police members went the extra mile to ensure that offenders get their day in court when they detained two males on Wednesday, 09 October 2024, in isolated incidents. Lwandle police were busy with patrols, when they acted on the sound of gunshots which led them to an address in Matshaya Street. The members approached a man standing in front of a tavern and ensued with a search. In the process they confiscated a 9mm pistol with ammunition after the man could not produce a valid license to be in possession of the firearm. They detained the adult male for the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. In an unrelated intervention, Philippi East Crime Prevention unit responded to information of a possible storage facility for ammunition within their policing precinct. The members operationalised the information and proceeded to an address in Lower Cross Roads, and tactically approached the residence. Upon entering the house they found a man attempting to hide an automatic rifle. The police members disarmed the man and continued to search the premises upon which they confiscated 65 mandrax tablets, one sachet filled with methamphetamine, 1229 different calibre rounds of ammunition as well as a hijacked motor vehicle. They detained the 35-year-old man on charges of possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition, possession of drugs and the possession of a hijacked motor vehicle. Once charged, the suspects are expected to make their respective court appearances in the Strand and Athlone Magistrates’ Courts on the mentioned cases.
