Media Statement WESTERN CAPE – The resolve to eradicate the proliferation of drugs, with the strategic deployment of resources along highways, by-ways and secondary roads once again yielded excellent results with the confiscation of drugs with an estimated street value of R280 000 in the Garden Route District. On Thursday, 23 May 2024 at about 11:00, George police members in conjunction with traffic conducted a vehicle check point on the N9 near Herold outside George. The members pulled over a Toyota Yaris and upon searching the vehicle found a parcel concealed under the passenger seat. The vigilant members opened the parcel and found Mandrax tablets stashed inside. Police confiscated 1896 mandrax tablets and arrested the two occupants on a charge of dealing in drugs. The suspects aged 31 and 39, both from the Cape Metropole, remains in police custody. They will appear in court once charged. Meanwhile, a 34 year old man was scheduled to appear in the Ladismith Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 23 May 2024, following his arrest on a charge of dealing in drugs. Ladismith Crime Prevention Unit members were strategically deployed on the R62 when they stopped a suspicious vehicle. A search of the vehicle ensued and the members found 2007 mandrax tablets as well as 200gram tik concealed in two 5 litre wine boxes. The members confiscated the find and arrested the man. These arrests and confiscations form part of ongoing efforts to rid communities of drugs which remain a major contributor to serious and violent crime in this region. The deployment of police along strategic routes is in line with the policing approach of the Western Cape to curb the influx of drugs into the province and similar operations will be sustained as part of “Operation Shanela”.
