Media Statement WESTERN CAPE – The arrest of suspects in possession of abalone without a valid permit remain high on the priority list for members of the South African Police Service. On Thursday, 10 October 2024, during an integrated intelligence driven operation led by Paarl K9 unit, members pursued information of a white SUV transporting abalone from Hermanus in the direction of Franschhoek. The members spotted the suspicious motor vehicle at about 21:55 on the R45. When the driver of the suspicious vehicle became aware of the presence of the police members, he sped off with the police members in pursuit. During the high speed chase the driver of the SUV lost control upon which the vehicle left the road. The members inspected the bags which was ejected from the vehicle and confiscated 4963 units of abalone with an estimated street value of R250 000. They detained the 21-year-old male driver of the SUV for the unlawful possession of abalone.
