Media Statement WESTERN CAPE – The dedication of police members to rid the streets of unlicensed and prohibited firearms and ammunition resulted in the detention of three suspects in Nyanga policing precinct on Tuesday 14 May 2024. Police members of the Anti-Economical Task Team were busy with focussed operations in Nyanga when they received information about firearms being stored at a premises in Zwelitsha Drive. They immediately operationalised the information and entered the identified premises, and confiscate a 9mm pistol with ammunition. This resulted in the arrest of two persons, a male and a female aged 25 on a charge of possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition. They continued to pursue information of possible firearms at a house in Nkola Road. Upon entering the premises, they encountered an unknown man, searched him, and in the process the members recovered a 9mm pistol with ammunition. They detained the 23-year-old man on a charge of possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition.
Once charged the suspects are expected to make their respective court appearances in the Athlone Magistrates court on the mentioned charges.
