Media Statement GQEBERHA – In the wake of devastating floods over the weekend that have left many communities in dire need, a heart-warming display of unity and compassion has emerged. The collaboration between police (in the affected areas of Kariega, Kwanobuhle, Kamesh and Kabega Park), businesses and the communities, highlights the power of collective action. The abovementioned entities have come together to provide essential support to those affected, demonstrating the best of humanity in challenging times. Station Commanders working tirelessly with their members have gone above and beyond their duty of maintaining law and order. From coordinating rescue operations to distributing supplies, their contributions are praiseworthy. Local businesses have played a crucial role in the relief efforts. Many have donated funds, while others have provided essential supplies such as food, water, and clothing. Officers have worked untiringly, often putting their own safety at risk, to ensure that flood victims received the assistance they needed. Their efforts have not only saved lives but have also provided a sense of security and reassurance to the affected communities. Throughout the week, police and CPF’s handed out food parcels and warm meals to the affected families. On 04 June 2024, SAPS Kamesh with their CPF dished out nutritious meals to their community. Likewise, SAPS Kwanobuhle have also rallied together in support of their community and assisted with meals. On Wednesday, 05 June 2024, the Station Commanders of SAPS Kariega, Brigadier Andre Swart and SAPS Kabega Park, Colonel Tony Nomdoe, together with their members volunteered in providing hot meals, blankets and essential food items to the families that are housed in temporary shelters. SAPS Kariega with the assistance of the Women’s Network and Men for Change have risen to the occasion by opening their hearts and wallets to the flood victims. Not only have they provided a hot meal to the distraught and displaced families, they also offered emotional support. The spirit of volunteerism and mutual aid has been truly inspiring, showcasing the strength and unity between law enforcement and the communities. Also, on 05 June 2024, SAPS Kabega Park Station Commander and his team in collaboration with the Gift of the Givers handed out 600 food parcels and blankets at the Kuyga Community Hall. The Gift of the Givers have been instrumental in the relief efforts. As soon as they heard about the devastation in these areas, they swiftly responded and efficiently came to the aid of those in need. Their contributions have been invaluable and highly appreciated.
Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner, Maj Gen Vuyisile Ncata extended his appreciation to everyone who have contributed and responded in any way possible to the plight of those that have lost loved ones as well as those who have been left homeless from the devastation of the floods. ‘In times of crisis, it is the unity and compassion of people that make the most significant difference. The actions of these good-hearted individuals, organizations and our SAPS members have shown that even in the darkest of times, the light of human kindness shines brightly,’ thanked Maj Gen Ncata.
