Media Statement WESTERN CAPE – In a constant effort to remove firearms from the wrong hands and ensure safety in our communities, police members arrested three suspects in the early hours of this morning for the possession of unlicensed firearms, prohibited firearms and ammunition. On Tuesday morning, 01 October 2024 information was received that illegal firearms and ammunition were being kept at a premises in Bellatrix Street, Hopland, Saldanha. With the assistance of West Coast District K9, a 35-year-old male who has a lengthy criminal record and a 25-year-old female were apprehended in a caravan that was parked behind a house at the mentioned address. The firearms, a shotgun and 9mm pistol with its serial number removed and ammunition were hidden underneath the bed in a caravan. In an unrelated incident this morning at around 03:30, Public Order Police members received information about a firearm being stored in Lamoenshoek Street, Mitchells Plain. The members swiftly responded to the identified address where upon arrival they knocked at the gate and the suspect ran away when he saw that it was police. The members gave chase and caught him with a black pistol without a serial number and 9mm rounds of ammunition. A 43-year-old man was arrested and detained at Mitchells Plain SAPS for the illegal possession of prohibited firearm and ammunition. The three suspects will appear in the Vredendal and Mitchells Plain Magistrates’ Court on the mentioned charges.
