POTCHEFSTROOM – Wolmaransstad Police arrested three suspects between the ages of 22 and 40 on Friday, 17 May 2024, after being linked to the alleged murder of a 28-year-old man. According to information at our disposal, the suspects allegedly assaulted and burnt the 28-year-old man on Sunday, 28 April 2024, at Witpoort in Wolmaransstad. Reports suggest that the man assaulted and killed his 15-year-old girlfriend at their residential place at Witpoort Saturday night, 27 April 2024. The man then wrapped the victim’s body with a blanket and left his shack. The victim’s mother got worried when her daughter failed to come to greet her on Sunday morning as she usually does. She went to the minor’s boyfriend’ place to check her daughter as she was pregnant. She was surprised to find her daughter’s lifeless body in the shack. Allegedly, members of the community searched for the boyfriend and found him working around the neighbourhood. They took him back to his residential place where they allegedly assaulted and poured him with paraffin and burnt him. The boyfriend was subsequently rescued by police and took him to a local hospital, where he died on Friday, 3 May 2024. After the incident, police conducted their investigations and the three suspects were arrested after they were linked to the mob justice incident. More arrests are imminent. The three suspects are expected to appear before the Wolmaransstad Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 20 May 2024.
The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, condemned the incident and pleaded with the community to stop taking law into their own hands , but to work together with the police in the fight against crime.
