WESTERN CAPE – The vigilance of members attached to the Provincial Economic Infrastructure Task Team and the Extortion Task Team led to the arrest of a 24-year-old male who was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm on Tuesday. The members were busy with crime prevention duties in Japhta K Masemola when they noticed a gold in colour Mercedes Benz making a U-turn when the driver saw the marked police vehicles approaching. A high-speed chase ensued during which the vehicle was forced to a halt. The suspect jumped out of the vehicle but was apprehended. Upon searching the suspect, they found in his possession a 9mm pistol with ammunition, five cellular telephones and an undisclosed amount of cash. In an unrelated matter members of the Khayelitsha Crime Prevention unit arrested a 25-year-old man for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition in Maphongwana Street, Site C, Khayelitsha. The members were busy with stop and search operations when they search the suspect who appeared to be nervous when he saw the police members. He was found in possession of a 9mm pistol with ammunition.
The suspects are due to make their respective court appearances in the Khayelitsha Magistrates’ court once they have been charged.
