POTCHEFSTROOM – A 40-year-old suspect is expected to appear before the Schweizer-Reneke Magistrates Court today, following his arrest on Tuesday, 19 March 2024, for two counts of murder and another two of attempted murder. According to information available at this stage, reports suggest that a confrontation ensued during a protest action at Extension 5, Ipelegeng Location. Allegedly, some members of the community demanded to be employed on a sewer pipeline project. During the confrontation, a shot was allegedly fired towards two construction vehicles, which were also pelted with stones, thus causing damages. One of the construction vehicles drivers, reportedly fired shots and in the process, an 11-year-old boy and a 33-year-old man were shot at. The minor died at the scene while the adult male succumbed to injuries at Schweizer-Reneke hospital. In addition, two other males were taken to hospital due to serious injuries they sustained. The police arrested the suspect and seized his firearm. Investigations into the incidents are underway and police are currently monitoring the situation.
Meanwhile, the Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena is shocked about the loss of lives and at the same time conveyed condolences to the deceased’s families. He warned the public about the danger of violent protests where even children and the innocent are often used. The Provincial Commissioner further emphasised the significance of embarking on peaceful protests to avoid undesirable situations such as this one.
