Media Statement POTCHEFSTROOM – Police in conjunction with other law enforcement agencies and role players continue with weekly high-density Operation Shanela to prevent and combat crime. A total of 5 416 actions were executed between Monday, 14 and Sunday, 20 October 2024, and that led to the arrest of 1 020 suspects for various offences. The 5 416 actions included amongst others, 10 roadblocks, searching of 164 premises, 2 464 persons, 1 087 vehicles, closing of nine unlicensed liquor premises and inspection of 94 others. Furthermore, 41 Second-hand-dealers were inspected as well as 156 farms and seven informal businesses involved in hospitality and retail (to ensure Labour Law compliance). Additionally, 906 Patrols and 231 stop and search actions were also conducted. The suspects were among others, arrested for crimes that included the following: 17 for robbery, six for murder, six for rape, 110 for assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm (GBH), 60 for common assault, 28 for malicious damage to property, 36 for burglary at residential and business premises,70 for possession of drugs, 10 for illegal possession of firearms, 40 for illicit mining, four for dealing in drugs, 30 for illegal dealing in liquor, five for theft out of / from motor vehicle, five for theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle and 31 for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Moreover, 60 suspected undocumented persons were taken in for processing by Immigration Officials. Of the 1 020 suspects, 476 were apprehended during detectives suspect raiding operations. During the operations, a variety of drugs, 15 cell phones, eight firearms, 640 kg of copper, 309 rounds of ammunition, explosives, liquor, tobacco products, four vehicles and other items were confiscated. The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, thanked all role players for their continuous daily support and operationalizing of proper planning to ensure safer communities.
