NELSPRUIT – A 79-year-old man was arrested on Sunday, 30 March 2025, at Cottondale Trust in Acornhoek after allegations that he raped a 14-year-old girl. According to reports, the victim was playing on the street with her siblings, and it was during this time when the suspect called her to his house and allegedly raped her. It is further reported that during the incident, one community member somehow received information of what was happening, and it is said that he went to the pensioner’s house to rescue the minor. When knocking on the door, the suspect apparently refused to open the door. The news also reached the ears of the victim’s mother as well as some community members. The community members then mobilized and went to the house in numbers. They then reportedly ordered the suspect to open the door, and during the process, the man was assaulted by the community members. The Police were alerted about the incident as well, and they went to the scene where the man was whisked away. The victim was then taken to the hospital, and a rape case was opened. Meanwhile, the man was apprehended and charged accordingly. He is expected to appear at the Acornhoek Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 01 April 2025. The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr.) Zeph Mkhwanazi has welcomed the arrest and raised a serious concern regarding incidents of rapes and sexual offences in the province.
