Patrick Vieira Named New Senegal Coach in Stunning Dakar Homecoming

Senegal have turned to Dakar-born French football legend Patrick Vieira to lead the Lions of Teranga into a new era following their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.

Senegal have appointed former Arsenal and France great Patrick Vieira as the new head coach of the national team, handing the Dakar-born World Cup winner his first job in international management.

The Senegalese Football Federation confirmed Vieira’s appointment on Tuesday, 18 August 2026, as the Lions of Teranga begin rebuilding following their disappointing exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Vieira replaces Pape Thiaw and arrives with an extraordinary personal connection to the country he will now lead.

FROM DAKAR TO WORLD CUP GLORY

Vieira was born in Dakar, Senegal, before moving to France as a child.

He went on to become one of the defining midfielders of his generation, representing France more than 100 times and helping Les Bleus win the 1998 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2000.

At club level, Vieira became synonymous with Arsenal during one of the most successful periods in the English club’s history.

The powerful midfielder made more than 400 appearances for the Gunners and won three Premier League titles, including captaining Arsenal’s famous unbeaten Invincibles team.

Now, decades after leaving Dakar, Vieira’s football journey has brought him back to the country of his birth.

FIRST NATIONAL TEAM JOB

The Senegal appointment represents another major milestone in Vieira’s managerial career.

He has previously coached clubs including Crystal Palace, Nice, Strasbourg and Genoa, but has never previously managed a senior national team.

His arrival comes at an important moment for Senegal.

The Lions of Teranga have established themselves among Africa’s leading football nations in recent years, most notably winning their first Africa Cup of Nations title in 2022.

Expectations will therefore be enormous.

Vieira will inherit a country accustomed to competing for Africa’s biggest prizes and possessing a deep pool of players based across Europe’s leading leagues.

A SYMBOLIC HOMECOMING

Beyond the tactical questions surrounding his appointment, Vieira’s return carries considerable symbolism.

A boy born in Dakar left Senegal and ultimately became a World Cup champion with France. He will now attempt to use the experience accumulated across more than three decades at the highest levels of European football to help the country of his birth pursue continental success.

Attention will quickly turn towards Senegal’s next international fixtures and preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualification campaign.

For Vieira, it represents both a significant managerial challenge and a remarkable homecoming.

Patrick Vieira has returned to where his story began. This time, he returns as the man entrusted with leading Senegal.
