Parliament has pledged to take firm action following serious allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, against several high-ranking officials.
Mkhwanazi has accused senior figures within the police service and government of corruption, interference in police operations, and connections to criminal networks. Among those named are the Minister of Police, a deputy national commissioner, a known contractor, and an alleged associate. According to Mkhwanazi, their actions have obstructed justice and tampered with sensitive investigations, including the removal of case dockets involving influential individuals.
In response, Parliament has directed three oversight committees to urgently investigate the matter. A report is expected by July 23. The chairperson of the Justice and Constitutional Development committee emphasized that Parliament is committed to ensuring appropriate consequences once the facts are established. He warned that mishandling the issue could have serious implications.
Security has reportedly been increased for Mkhwanazi, given the seriousness of his claims and the high-profile individuals involved. The investigation marks a critical moment for accountability within the country’s law enforcement and political leadership.
