Media Statement GAUTENG – Arfhan Ahmed (39) a Pakistan national was on 13 June 2024 convicted and sentenced by the Krugersdrop Magistrate court for corruption. On 24 March 2022 a multidisciplinary operation was conducted by members of the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime, Crime Intelligence, Tactical Response Team (TRT) and Department of Home Affairs Anti-Corruption Unit where they acted on information about corruption taking place at the Department of Home Affairs in Krugersdorp. Passports were being processed using South Africans Identity numbers and fingerprints while overriding the system by inserting pictures of foreign nationals, a term referred to as photo swapping. During the operation (14) South African citizens, (12) Somalian nationals and (1) Pakistan national Ahmed, who is believed to be the kingpin were arrested, while two vehicles and several cell phones were seized. On 13 June 2024, Arfhan Ahmed was sentenced by the Krugersdorp Magistrate court to (10) years direct imprisonment of which (4) years will run concurrently previous (10) years sentence imposed on Ahmed in a separate matter earlier this year and was declared unfit to possess a firearm. Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation in Gauteng has welcomed the sentence and lauded the investigation and prosecution team on a job well executed, and continues to warn anyone who continues to commit crime in South Africa that they will be prosecuted.
