Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has criticised sections of the club’s home support for turning on the team, saying those who boo the players are not the club’s “true supporters”.
The Buccaneers produced a dominant display on Sunday, thrashing TS Galaxy 6-0 at Mbombela Stadium in a Betway Premiership clash.
Speaking after the emphatic win, Ouaddou said the performance was a strong response from a group of players whose commitment should never be questioned.
“It is more than a reaction. It is a good answer for the people who are doubting the commitment of these boys,” said Ouaddou.
“I always say that in our team there is no one who enters the pitch willing to lose or to draw.”
Pirates had come into the match under pressure after being held to a 1-1 draw in their previous outing, but they bounced back in ruthless fashion against Galaxy.
Ouaddou said the difference was the atmosphere created by supporters who backed the team throughout the match.
“Some people need to understand that these players are sweating blood for this Pirates shirt,” he added.
“And what we need from them is simple. We scored six goals today because we were helped by the fantastic support from the true fans.”
The Moroccan mentor praised the support Pirates receive on the road, especially in Mbombela and Durban, and suggested the players thrive when they feel fully backed from the stands.
“Every time we come to this city, we have fantastic support. Every time we go to Durban, we have fantastic support,” said Ouaddou.
“And the players feel that. Unfortunately, at Orlando, when you miss a goal or you draw, people start to boo the boys.
“Those are not the true supporters. You saw here how, when people support the team, the players respond.”
Ouaddou also commended his players for their attitude and determination, insisting Pirates remain firmly in the title fight.
“Congratulations to the boys today. We have sent a strong message that we are not done, and we will fight until the last second.”
The victory moved Pirates back to the top of the Betway Premiership table, although they are only one point ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns, who still have a game in hand.
