Tragedy strikes Orania in murder-suicide that claims lives of estranged couple
The close-knit Afrikaner enclave of Orania has been left reeling after a tragic murder-suicide claimed the lives of Danie van der Westhuizen, 47, and his estranged wife, Marlette van der Westhuizen, 45 on March, 31, 2025.
The incident unfolded just after 6h45 PM at Marlette’s residence, where Danie allegedly shot her multiple times before taking his own life. Their 12-year-old daughter witnessed the horror just days before her birthday leaving the community shaken and the girl orphaned.
Sources close to the couple suggest rising personal tensions may have contributed to the tragedy. Danie had recently returned from the United States, where he worked on an agricultural visa. During his time abroad, Marlette reportedly began a relationship with another man. Attempts at reconciliation after his return reportedly failed.
Danie was employed as a supervisor in Orania, while Marlette worked for the local town council. Both were well-regarded by residents, who described them as “wonderful people” known for their warmth and community involvement.
The incident has shattered the town’s reputation for safety. Orania, a community of approximately 3,000 residents, operates without a police station and is known for its low crime rate, maintained through resident patrols. In the wake of the shooting, police from nearby Hopetown have launched an investigation.
Meanwhile, the community has rallied around the couple’s daughter, offering emotional support and birthday gifts in an effort to ease her grief. Local social workers have commended her resilience in the face of unimaginable loss.
