Media Statement OR TAMBO – To heed to the call by the State President of the Republic that multi-disciplinary compliance operations directed at food distributors be intensified, OR Tambo had its operations within the District concentrating on non-compliance in Spaza shops. Officials from different departments were addressed together with law enforcement agencies on their toes and an operation concepts included enforcement of food, cosmetics and disinfectants act, enforcement of National norms and standards relating to environmental health, enforcement of South African emigration Act to mention a few was unpacked. The operation was conducted from Mthatha to Tsolo and Qumbu and they confiscated a lot of expired food in Spaza shops whilst also in Port St Johns operations were intensified. In one of Spaza shops in Lotana locality, Qumbu, some expired food staff was picked up and taken away from the shop by health inspectors. Most goods confiscated were disposed of with large quantities recovered in Mthatha and its/her surroundings. Mqanduli also came on board with spaza shops being visited on Friday, 22 November 2024, confiscating some staff.
Operations are still ongoing around the district making sure that the call is adhered to so as to have no more food borne illnesses in the near future.
