Media Statement BLOEMFONTEIN – The multi-disciplinary Operation Vala Umgodi in the Free State continues to clean the streets and eliminate issues of illegal mining. The week between 15 April 2024 and 22 April 2024 saw more than 126 suspects arrested for illicit mining operation and possession of gold-bearing material in Welkom, Vierfontein, Thabong, Virginia, Odendaalsrus, Allanridge, and Bothaville. Stop and search operations as well as vehicle checkpoints were conducted yielding successful results as more illegal contrabands was discovered in possession of suspects or vehicles driven by suspects. Second-hand Goods dealers were also visited for compliance purposes. The compliance inspections are also done at firearm dealers in the province. High-density Operation “Shanela” also continues in the province for the period 15 April to 22 April 2024. The operatives managed to arrest 771 suspects in cases such as possession of a dangerous weapon, murder, rape, dealing in drugs, possession of gold-bearing material, robbery, assaults, and driving while under the influence. The 97 suspects were booked for contravention of the Traffic Act. The disruptive operations continued throughout the week and 5,922 people were searched while 1,913 vehicles were checked during the sporadic vehicle checkpoints held in and around the province. The two operations “Shanela” and “Vala Umgodi” continue and the arrested suspects will appear in court in the respective areas of detention. Ends
