Media Statement NELSPRUIT – An Intelligence driven operation conducted by members from Operation Vala Umgoli has led to the arrest of 16 foreign nationals for contravention of the Immigration Act of South Africa. The joint operation was conducted by multidisciplinary teams from Ehlanzeni, Gert Sibande and Nkangala District, in conjunction with members from the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) at a certain farm in Waterval Boven on Friday, 21 February 2025. Amongst the arrested suspects, aged between 18 and 40, seven are females, and the rest are males. These suspects were also charged for possession of gold bearing materials. More charges could be added against the suspects in relation to the ongoing investigation by the Police as it is suspected that they were involved in illegal mining activities. The men and women in Blue also confiscated some items such as generators, Phenduka’s, and other equipment. The suspects are expected to appear at the Belfast Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 24 February 2025, facing the said charges. Meanwhile, the Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi has applauded law enforcement agencies for the job well done. The General indicated that efforts will continue to be intensified throughout the province to combat these illegal mining activities. Ends
