POLOKWANE – The illicit mining team under operation Vala Umgodi in Sekhukhune District arrested four suspects for illegal sand mining. The operation which was an intelligence driven initiative was conducted on 01 November 2024 at about 08:00. The multidisciplinary team comprising National Intervention Unit, Technical Response Team (TRT) , Public Order Policing,) POP) Organised Crime Investigation Unit and other team members approached an area in Letebejane, Rakgoadi Policing area and found the suspects busy with illegal sand mining. The suspects who are aged between 39 and 49 were arrested and are set to appear before Motetema magistrates court soon. While busy arresting the illegal sand mining suspects, the police received information that some foreign nationals were selling illicit cigarettes, they proceeded to the location and arrested two of them, and further confiscated the illicit cigarettes in the process. In another turn of events, intelligence information was received about abandoned firearms. The information led the team to a secluded place in Mamphokgo village under SAPS Rakgoadi where two 9mm pistols, three magazines and fourteen rounds of ammunition were found and confiscated. The following items are confiscated * 01 pick * 01 spade * 04 shovels * 02 9mm pistols * 03 magazines * 14 rounds of ammunition. * Boxes of illicit cigarettes. Police investigations are ongoing to determine the origin of firearms and any involvement in the commission of crime. Ends
