Media Statement KIMBERLEY – Operation Vala Umgodi, continues with increased visibility at identified mining shafts and dumps in Namakwa and Frances Baard Districts in the Northern Cape. The multi-disciplinary teams arrested 14 suspects for illegal mining, trespassing, and possession of drugs during operations that commenced on Monday, 24 March 2025. The team in the Frances Baard District, detained seven suspects in Kimberley for illegal mining as well as dealing and possession of drugs, around the Otties Koppie mining dumps and during stop and searches. Meanwhile, the team in the Namakwa District, detained seven illegal miners, who were charged for illegal mining, trespassing and contravention of the Immigration Act, in and around Bontekoe and Nuttabooi mining areas of Kleinsee. The teams confiscated a silver Toyota Run-X sedan, believed to have been used in the commission of crime, drugs, numerous mining implements, bags with diamond bearing gravel, and cash believed to be the proceeds of criminal activity. The police through Operation Vala Umgodi, will continue with the removal of the immediate threats posed by the illegal miners through detention, ensuring their presence in Courts.
