FREE STATE – The SAPS Airwing, Tactical Response Team, Local Criminal Record Centre, Crime Intelligence, Detective Services, SANDF and Department of Home Affairs’ joint venture continue to deal harshly on illegal mining, trespassing in the mining environment and undocumented persons in Welkom, Thabong and Kopanong mine at Vierfontein. The arrested undocumented persons are from Lesotho, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Eight suspects were arrested for illegal mining, trespassing, conspiracy to commit crime, possession of suspected gold bearing material, possession of suspected stolen properties and contravention of the immigration Act. From 20 until 23 June 2024 the following activities took place: 14 Vehicle Check Points and 62 stop and searches were conducted. 127 people and 46 vehicles were searched. 13 mines, 02 power stations and 13 malls were visited. The SAPS Airwing conducted two drone flights in a field on the Hennenman road. The arrested suspects will appear on the 24 June 2024 in the Viljoenskroon and Welkom Magistrate Courts respectively.
