FREE STATE – The holistic, multifaceted, multidisciplinary, integrated Operation Vala Umgodi, has entered into another phase throughout the Country at identified hotspots including Free State Province. The National Intervention: Stabilization and Normalization approach is aimed at addressing the challenges facing South African Mining Industry as a result of Illicit mining carried out by organised criminal groups. The illegal activities threatens safety and security of law abiding citizens living around the mining areas and risk or hazard for those involved in it. The planned take down of syndicates and existent network of supply and demand [illicit miners and handlers]; involved in illegal and unauthorized mining is carried out by the South African Police Service, South African National Defense Force, Department of Home Affairs, Private Security Companies and other role-players and stakeholders. Crime Intelligence guided operational concepts are executed at neglected properties; deserted open shafts and ventilation, informal settlements and hostels, National and/ or Provincial roads and borderline areas of neighbouring countries [as analysis indicates that Illicit mining is also a cross-border crime] to eradicate illegal trade of precious metals and stones. During the past week of operational activities; two (2) undocumented persons were arrested for Trespassing on mine area and Possession of suspected gold bearing material weighing at 22,70 kilograms at Beatrix Shaft. Four (4) males; of which two (2) are foreign nationals were arrested for Possession of suspected gold bearing material weighing at 39 kilograms and Possession of gold processing equipment in Dagbreek, Welkom. One (1) suspect was arrested for contravention of Section 3 of the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities; contravention of Mine Health and Safety Act and Conspiracy to commit crime [smuggling of biltong, soya mince, powder drinks, medicine and cigarettes] at Kopanong Mine. A team of operators conducted Vehicle Check Points along the borderline area and a Silver Isuzu Single Cab was stopped and searched. Two (2) males aged 42 and 43 were then arrested for Possession of suspected stolen livestock; 52 live sheep with 1 dead estimated to be valued at R132 000-00 and 5 goats valued at R8 000.00 in Ficksburg borderline area. All suspects will appear before Court soon.
