FREE STATE – Intensive operational concepts executed by Operation Vala Umgodi Proactive and Combat operators is forcing the underground illegal miners to abandon their illicit mining activities and surrendering to authorities to be arrested. Concerted efforts by the South African Police Service, other role players such as South African National Defense Force; Department of Home Affairs and Private Security Companies as stakeholders have seen food supply to underground illegal miners cut as foodstuffs are intercepted and seized. Three (3) suspects aged between 25 and 37 were arrested at Kopanong Mine and Gold bearing amalgam seized from their possession. Actions continued in Beatrix Mine area as operators patrolled the mining area on foot, vehicles; and with the help of drone pilots… the Combat team held observation and way-lay. Two (2) males were spotted and as the teams closed-in on them, the suspects propelled themselves and plunged down the old mine shaft/ ventilation or opening using a rope. The team then recovered a pistol, foodstuffs [tinned fish/ beans and instant porridge] and dried leaves of dagga believed to fetch profit estimated at R12 000.00 when sold to underground illegal miners. Ten (10) undocumented persons were arrested for Contravention of the Immigration Act. All suspects will appear in Court soon. Ends
