Media Statement BLOEMFONTEIN – An intelligence driven operation led members of Vala Umgodi to a house in Kanana Orkney where two hunting rifles, a pistol and ammunition were seized. Two suspects, aged 24 and 42, were arrested for possession of illegal firearms and ammunition on 24 July 2024. In a second incident, members received information about the possible transportation of dagga between Winburg and Verkeerdevlei in the N1 road when they stopped two bakkies. While they were busy searching, 15 bags of dagga covered with plastics which weigh 346 kg with the street value of R525 000 were found and seized. Five suspects aged 30, 32, 35 and 38 were arrested and the two vehicles were seized. On further investigation, the Ford Ranger’s engine was found to have been tampered with. On the 24 July 2024, members also followed up information about illegal mining and proceeded to Arm 7 shaft mine next to Phomolong Village, Welkom. A 38-year-old male person was found in possession of gold bearing material and he was found to be undocumented. On 24 July 2024, members of Vala Umgodi led by Captain Mbulelo Peyi and Mine security, were busy with crime prevention duties at Kopanong hostel premises and Kopanong shaft 9 mine premises when they arrested a 38-year-old mine employee with dagga weighing 5kg. He was arrested and he is facing possession of dagga and contravention of the Mine Health and Safety Act. These suspects will appear in Viljoenskroon, Winburg, Welkom and Orkney Magistrate’s Courts respectively on the 29 July 2024. We will continue to prevent illegal mining, maintains high Police visibility at mine areas and deal harshly on related crimes. Ends
