KIMBERLEY – Northern Cape police, together with the Traffic Department, Department of Home Affairs, Department of Transport, Safety and Liaison, Department of Social Development and Correctional Services were out in full force during the execution of Operation Shanela with the focus on illegal firearms, murder, rape, trio crimes, and aggravating robbery. Disruptive actions were executed in high crime areas, which included roadblocks, vehicle check points, high visibility patrols, compliance inspections, and stop and search actions. During the weeklong operation, 277 suspects were arrested for various offences, including murder, rape, attempted murder, robbery and drug and alcohol related offences. This includes the arrest of 3 wanted suspects who were traced and apprehended by detectives. A total of 6150 persons and 2317 vehicles were stopped and searched during the actions. Fifteen (15) unlicensed liquor outlets were closed during compliance inspections, and hundreds of litres of alcohol were confiscated and concoctions destroyed. These disruptive actions resulted in the confiscation of copper cable, cellphones, dangerous weapons, drugs such as cocaine, tik, mandrax tablets and dagga and illegal firearms. As Women’s Month drew to a close, several actions under the auspices of Operation Basadi were executed to showcase the operational readiness of female members and to create awareness regarding crimes against women, children, and vulnerable groups. Communities are commended for reporting valuable information that led to the arrest of perpetrators and to continue aiding the police by exposing criminals. Ends
