KIMBERLEY – With more boots on the ground, Operation Shanela’s weekly multi-disciplinary high density operations remains focused on addressing priority crimes in the province. Disruptive actions across the province commenced on Monday, 03 March 2025 and concluded on Sunday, 09 March 2025, focused on intensified crime prevention and combating efforts to curb criminal activities in the province. These police actions included vehicle control points (VCP’s), stop and searches, roadblocks, tracing of wanted suspects, foot and vehicle patrols, compliance inspections, awareness campaigns, community outreach actions with community policing board meetings being conducted. During the weekly operations, police arrested 325 persons for an array of crimes including: robberies, murder, attempted murder, rape, assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, assault common, housebreakings, theft of or from motor vehicle, malicious damage to property, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, illegal migrants and illicit mining. 46 Vehicle control points (VCP’S) and 10 roadblocks were conducted. Numerous premises were searched, including 2453 vehicles were stopped with 5026 persons being searched. Compliance inspections were executed, and unlicensed liquor premises were closed, second-hand dealers and liquor premises, formal and informal businesses, farms, school visits were conducted and mines were also visited. During the operations, the police confiscated copper, dangerous weapons, thousands of litres of alcoholic beverages, drugs, dagga and money believed to be proceeds of crime.
The Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola reiterated that Operation Shanela will continue unabated in all five districts with a zero tolerance approach towards all crimes in the province.
