Media Statement WESTERN CAPE – Continued efforts by police members to eradicate the distribution and abuse of drugs which are regarded as major crime generators in this province, proved to be successful with the strategic deployment of Operation Shanela and other members in crime ridden areas which led to the confiscation of large quantities of drugs and the arrests of those found in possession thereof during the weekend. On Sunday 13 October 2024 at approximately 20:25 members attached to Operation Shanela executed a search warrant at a premises situated at Rembrand Street, Scottsville, Kraaifontein following information gathered about illegal dealings in drugs. Upon arrival at the identified premises, the members started with a search during which they discovered and seized a substantial consignment of drugs consisting of mandrax tables and cocaine. The members also seized an undisclosed amount of cash which are believed to be the proceeds of the illicit drug trade. A 72-year-old female was arrested for dealing in drugs and will appear in the Bluedowns Magistrates’ court once charged. Meanwhile, around 21:20 members deployed in Mitchells Plain pounced on a residents in Du Toitskloof, Tafelsig where they encountered a 27-year-old suspect and search the premises following information about illegal dealing in drugs. During the search of the premises, the members found and seized 143 sachets of tik, 166 mandrax tablets and an undisclosed amount of cash. As a result, they arrested the suspect who had been charged with dealing in drugs. He will appear in the Mitchells Plain Magistrates’ court soon. In addition members deployed in Lwandle arrested a 42-year-old Nigerian national on the same day at about 18:30 at his residence in Chante Heigts in the Strand after they found him in possession of 437 mandrax tablets, a small quantity of crushed mandrax powder, a scale and an undisclosed amount of cash, believed to be the proceeds of the illicit drug trade. The suspect is expected to appear in the Strand Magistrates’ court once charged for dealing in drugs. The Provincial Commissioner of the Western Cape, Lt Gen (Adv.) Thembisile Patekile praised the members for their dedication to rid our streets from the scourge of drug abuse.
