EASTERN CAPE – Police in the Eastern Cape are continuing with their efforts of combating crime in the province with significant arrests made in the hotspot areas in the eight districts of the province. A total of 977 suspects were arrested for the period between 19 to 25 August 2024 for crimes such as murder, rape, robberies (business and residential), theft of motor vehicles, possession of illicit drugs, illegal possession of abalone amongst other arrests. Out of 74 932 actions that were executed, there were 35 high density operations, which are continuing to produce positive outcomes as police maintain the weekly intelligence led actions. Some of the significant executed actions: • Persons searched – 24 861 • Vehicles searched – 7 895 • Tracking operations by the detectives – 140 • Vehicle checkpoints manned – 713 • Roadblocks – 30 Notable arrests: • Contravening the Firearms Control Act – 28 • Illegal possession of firearms – 16 • Illegal possession of ammunition – 14 • Dealing in illicit drugs – 28 • Selling liquor without licence (fines) – 25 • Drunk driving – 55 During this period, a total of seven (07) suspects were arrested only in the OR Tambo District for possession of unlicensed firearm. The same district, following the launch of the Provincial Extortion Hotline number 082 387 1561 in Mthatha on Friday, 23/08, it recorded a number of successes: – Closure of three shebeens, and owners were fined R 5 000 each – Eight immigrants were arrested for contravening the Immigration Act – Sixteen (16) motor vehicles were impounded for various offences – Traffic fines totalling R 9 500 were issued Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Nomthetheleli Mene is confident that successes attained through Operation Shanela are definitely making a difference in the hotspot areas across the province. ‘We are flushing out criminals, as well as increasing the rate of confiscation of illegal firearms in the province’, added Lt Gen Mene Ends
