Media Statement NORTHERN CAPE – The SAPS, together with other law enforcement agencies, were out in full force during the execution of Operation Shanela in Modderivier on Friday, 23 August 2024. During a roadblock on the N12, a vehicle was stopped and searched, and dagga with an estimated value of R440 000 was found concealed in suitcases. The Acting Provincial Commissioner for the Northern Cape, Major General Luntu Ngubelanga, led the multi-disciplinary operation in Modderrivier and surrounding areas. The Acting District Commissioner for Frances Baard, Brigadier Nicky Mtongana, was the Overall Commander, and the Kagisho Station Commander, Colonel Michelle Ford took the lead as female Operational Commander during the Women’s Month operation. Provincial Components, the Frances Baard District Office, Galeshewe, Kagisho, Roodepan and Kimberley SAPS , Provincial and local Traffic, the Departments of Labour, Home Affairs, Consumer Protection Authority, Economic Development and Tourism, Gambling and Liquor board, and various Sol Plaatje Municipality components joined forces to squeeze the space for criminals to operate. The disruptive actions executed included compliance inspections, roadblocks, foot and vehicle patrols. At the roadblock on the N12 in Modderrivier, a total of 338 vehicles and 288 persons were stopped and searched, and 36 traffic fines with a total value of R25 000-00 were issued. The two suspects aged 26 and 28 respectively, who were found in possession of the dagga and arrested, are originally from Swaziland and Kwa- Zulu Natal. The Sol Plaatje Municipality, Provincial Consumer Protection, Gambling and Liquor board, Department of Home Affairs led the compliance inspections at several business premises, resulting in the closure of three shops due to non- compliance and detention of four male foreign nationals for verification of their passports. The disruptive actions concluded with high visibility patrols in Modderrivier, Richie and surrounding areas.
Major General Ngubelanga acknowledged abd appreciated the stakeholders for the collaboration and commended the ladies for taking the lead during the successful Women’s Month operations.
