PARKTOWN – More than 1000 suspects were arrested in Gauteng this past weekend during the multidisciplinary crime combatting Operation Shanela that was conducted across the province on Saturday, 18 May 2024. The suspects were arrested for crimes that range from car hijacking, business robbery, murder, attempted murder, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, rape and armed robbery. These suspects are expected to appear before various Magistrate Courts across the province on Monday, 20 May 2024. Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, took time from his busy schedule and led Operation Shanela in Mamelodi, Tshwane District, where he was joined by the Deputy Provincial Commissioner Policing Major General Fred Kekana and Tshwane Chief of Police Yolande Faro. A total number of three hundred and ten (310) suspects were arrested in Tshwane District. In Johannesburg District, police arrested three hundred and eleven (311) suspects, while one hundred and eighty-seven (187) suspects were arrested in Ekurhuleni District. The police in West Rand and Sedibeng Districts were also hard at work this weekend, and they arrested two hundred and thirty-seven (237) suspects for various crimes.
Lieutenant General Mthombeni ensures the community of Gauteng that the forces of Operation Shanela will continue to squeeze the space for the criminals. He also urges the community members to continue to be the eyes and ears of the police by reporting crime as they witness it.
