Media Statement FREE STATE – The holistic approach to illicit mining in Free State Province continues. The efforts of Operation Vala Umgodi team to address cross-border precipitating and predisposing factors influencing commission of crimes recently bore good results. When the team of operators stationed in the Ficksburg borders area conducted a vehicle check point on R26 Road, they found syringes, surgical blades, needles, tablets, and pills in a male’s backpack. Without providing any evidence to back up his claim, the 24-year-old man, who is also a foreign national, attempted to persuade the police that he was employed in the medical field. The suspect was immediately apprehended and a case of Contravention of Medicines and Controlled Substances Act 101 of 1965 was opened at Ficksburg Police Station Three (3) other suspects were arrested for possession of gold bearing material and processing equipment by Operation Vala uMgodi members. Two (2) of the suspects were found in possession of gold bearing material weighing at 21.44 kilograms in Modikeng Street – Thabong. Suspects aged 19 and 38 were arrested and a case docket of Possession of suspected gold bearing material was opened at Thabong police station. Another 41-year-old man was found in possession of gold bearing material weighing at 29.30 kilograms and a steel plate as well as buckets were seized at Beatrix Mine Shaft 2 area. A case of Possession of suspected gold bearing material; processing equipment with an additional charges of Trespassing on mine area and Contravention of Immigration Act was opened at Theunissen police station. All suspects will appear before different Courts soon. Ends
