Media Statement ZWELITSHA – The SAPS Eastern Cape Management has learnt with great shock and anger on the killing of a police Constable on 27 June 2024 at 20:30 while on duty in Mount Fletcher. It is reported that two police constables were on duty at Mjamba area, Mount Fletcher when they were ambushed by five unknown armed males in a Corsa bakkie. The suspects alighted from the vehicle and shot at the police officials injuring one of the police Constables in his upper body. The suspects further went to a nearby tavern and robbed the owner of his firearm, an undisclosed amount of cash and liquor and hijacked a VW Polo Vivo that has been as a getaway vehicle. The suspects fled the scene in the VW Polo Vivo, police firearms and are still at large. During the police patrols and searching of suspects, the polo vivo was found abandoned at Ncome Location outside Mount Frere. The Police Constable, owner of the liquor store and the driver of the hijacked vehicle were unharmed while the other Constable was taken to the hospital where he succumbed to death. Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene has issued a stern warning to those who exhibit such blatant disrespect for the law and those who enforce it. “We will not tolerate such brazen actions against our members. We call on the civil society to join hands with police in speedily bringing the perpetrators to book. We extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of our fallen member,’ added Lt Gen Mene.
