Makhanya says Broos overlooked him, now he wants in on Pitso’s Bafana
Rangers defender Olwethu Makhanya says Hugo Broos never really backed him — and he’s treating Pitso Mosimane’s arrival as a clean slate.
The 22-year-old has settled quickly in Glasgow after a reported R87-million move from Philadelphia Union. Broos spent years knocking the MLS, then still picked Makhanya for the World Cup squad in June. The centre-back never got a minute.
“I saw the coaching change as an opportunity for a fresh start,” Makhanya told SABC Sport. “I always felt like I was overlooked by the previous coach.”
He forced the Rangers deal when Union tried to keep him. Europe, he says, changes the conversation with Bafana. As for the MLS slating? He never bought it.
“I never understood the criticism because all these people probably never actually watched the MLS. People that really watch that league will tell you that it’s high-level football.
“Honestly if I were to rank them, I’ll put the Scottish Premiership first, second is the MLS, and the Betway Premiership is third.”
With a new era dawning for Bafana under Mosimane, Makhanya hopes to be a big part of the team going forward.
