Media Statement KIMBERLEY – Operation Shanela has tightened its grip on crime in the Northern Cape Province by securing the arrest of 252 suspects throughout the five districts from Monday, 21 October to Sunday, 27 October 2024. The multi-disciplinary teams inspected numerous liquor outlets during which 21 unlicensed outlets were closed down for non-compliance. Through heightened police visibility through vehicle and foot patrols as well as stop and search actions, 3, 131 vehicles and 6, 375 persons were stopped and searched at vehicle checkpoints (VCP’s) and at roadblocks across the province. Suspects were arrested for illegal dealing in liquor, burglaries at residential and business premises, malicious damage to property, assaults, robberies, dealing in drugs, and possession of dangerous weapons. Compliance inspections were conducted at second-hand dealers and liquor premises as well as formal and informal businesses, farms, scrapyards. During the weekly execution of the operation police confiscated counterfeit goods, dangerous weapons, firearms and ammunition, alcoholic beverages, drugs and cash. Various community outreach programmes were held in conjunction with community policing structures in the districts. The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, applauded all the force levels in conjunction with other departments in the execution of the operations and thanked the public for their efforts in the fight against crime.
