Media Statement KIMBERLEY – The Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape SAPS, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, as chairperson of the Provincial Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (PROVJOINTS), together with the MEC for COGSTA and Transport, Safety and Liaison, Mr Bentley Vass and members of the Executive Council, the Sol Plaatje Executive Mayor, Councillor Kagisho Sonyoni and external stakeholders led inspection teams addressing illicit foodstuff sold at tuckshops in the greater Kimberley area today, 16 November 2024. The Illicit foodstuff and non-compliance operations kicked off this morning, with teams comprising of officials from the Office of the Premier, the South African Police Service, Department Transport, Safety and Liaison, Environmental Health, Sol Plaatje Municipality and ward councillors under the leadership of the MEC Bentley Vass, the Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola and other high ranking officials who executed compliance inspections focusing on illicit and expired foodstuffs sold at tuckshops owned by foreign nationals in the greater Galeshewe, Kimberley and Roodepan areas. The Frances Baard District Commissioner, Major General Charlotte Makgari also accompanied a team in the Kimberley area. In total, 33 tuckshops were inspected of which only seven were found compliant, whilst 26 were closed down due to non-compliance, operating without valid licences and unhygienic reasons. Large amounts of foodstuff and other items were confiscated including expired food, damaged tin food and rotten vegetables. A total of nine undocumented persons were detained and one arrest for riotous behaviour, with three fines issued. An urgent plea is made to the residents of the province to avoid buying food items that are dented, cracked. Check expiry dates on the package, check the cleanliness of the shops were the items are sold and be attentive of the areas where food is prepared before buying it. Similar operations will be conducted throughout the Northern Cape specifically focusing on the sale expired and contaminated foodstuff and compliance. Ends
