Media Statement KIMBERLEY – On Tuesday, 23 July 2024, the Northern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola and her Provincial Management honoured Mandela Day when they visited the Boitumelo Special School for children which caters for learners with special needs in Galeshewe. Lt Gen Otola was accompanied by the Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Policing, Major General Luntu Ngubelanga, the Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Corporate Services, Major General Thabo Mphuthi and the Acting Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Crime Detection, Major General Jacques Raymond. The programme commenced with devotion by Lieutenant Colonel Sergio Kock, followed by the welcoming address by the School Principal, Ignatius Boitumelo Dikgetsi. The Programme Director, Brigadier Irene Kopeledi, the Provincial Head for Pro Active Policing, gave a brief synopsis of the purpose of the day by quoting Mandela, “without education, your children can never really meet the challenges they will face. So it’s very important to give children education and explain that they should play a role for their country”. Major General Ngubelanga added that the SAPS have an obligation through the Safer School Programme to ensure that our teachers and scholars and all staff are safe and secure, not only in the classroom and on school premises but also when they are out in the streets and at home. A message of support was rendered by Ms Kelebogile Moncho of the School Governing Body and Mr Teboho Molopo, the Chairperson of the Provincial Community Policing Board. The learners and attendees were entertained by the school choir. In the Keynote Address, Lt Gen Otola echoed the theme of the 2024 Mandela Day Celebrations -“IT IS STILL IN OUR HANDS TO COMBAT POVERTY AND INEQUALITY” which echoes Mandela’s lifelong commitment to social justice. She had a question and answer interaction session with the learners about safety hints on sexual offences, drugs abuse, child abuse and bullying. The team handed over goodie bags to the scholars as a token of appreciation and served a warm beverage to the learners. In his vote of thanks, Mr Teboho Tau, from the Department of Education at the Frances Baard District thanked the police management for choosing Boitumelo Special School in celebrating Nelson Mandela Day and dedicating their 67 minutes to the community.
