Media Statement KIMBERLEY – The South African Police Service, in collaboration with multiple law enforcement agencies, continues its efforts to combat crimes affecting the ocean economy along the Northern Cape coastline through Operation Phakisa. A coordinated effort was carried out in Kleinsee, Port Nolloth, Groenrivier, Hondeklipbaai, and Alexander Bay between Thursday, 20 March, and Sunday, 23 March 2025. During vehicle and foot patrols in coastal areas, law enforcement officials arrested one suspect for driving under the influence of alcohol and issued fines totalling R49 297-00 for violations of the Marine Living Resources Act and various traffic offenses. Additionally, compliance inspections were carried out at fish processing establishments, harbours, campsites, and business premises to ensure adherence to relevant regulations. This multi-disciplinary operation was executed by SAPS units, including Border Policing, Operational Response Services, the Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit, the Vehicle Crimes Investigation Unit, Springbok K9, Highway Patrol, and Crime Intelligence. These efforts were supported and intensified by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment, Customs K9, South African National Parks, and Provincial Traffic authorities. The SAPS together with law enforcement agencies, remain committed to curbing criminal activities along the Northern Cape coastline and ensuring the protection of marine resources and the broader ocean economy.
