Media Statement KIMBERLEY – The Northern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, joined the MEC for COGHSTA and Transport, Safety and Liaison, Mr Bentley Vass at the Northern Cape Launch of Transport Month. Dignitaries from the Department of Transport, Safety and Liaison, the Sol Plaatje Municipality, Frances Baard District Municipality, local Taxi Associations and senior SAPS officers converged at the N12 Weighbridge outside Kimberley on Monday, 7 October 2024 for the annual event. Mr Desmond Modise, from the Department of Transport, Safety and Liaison, outlined the purpose of the day under the theme: “Together, let us grow the economy and celebrate 30 years of democracy”. Several activities will be steered during October to underline Transport month, namely a career opportunity in aviation for learners in Upington, a bicycle exercise and fun walk to promote non-motorized transport, and concluding with a sobriety in transport event. Law enforcement, road users, and the community were encouraged to participate in the activities to promote awareness regarding road safety. In his keynote address, MEC Vass emphasised the pivotal role that the transport system plays in our economy. In order to ensure the safe passage of goods, minerals, and commuters, the transport system must be efficient and effective. In order to ensure learner attendance at schools, over 20 000 bicycles were handed to learners by the department, and this initiative will continue. He acknowledged taxi associations and bus transport and encouraged the improvement of relations by understanding and acknowledging respective challenges. MEC Vass conveyed a stern warning that fraud and corruption will not be tolerated within the transport sector and law enforcement and encouraged the public to report incidents.
The event concluded with a K78 roadblock on the N12, where dignitaries, together with SAPS, engaged with motorists and promoted awareness regarding road safety.
