Residents of Tswelelang township near Wolmaranstad in North West are hoping for better services following the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) victory of Maquassi Hills Ward 3.
The EFF claimed a victory during by-elections held early this week following the death of the ward councillor.
The party received 789 votes, a tally of 46%, while the African National Congress (ANC) lost the ward with 745 of the votes.
Yesterday, the EFF held a Siyabonga Rally following their victory in the ward.
Residents urged their new councillor, Lehlohonolo Metoa, to accelerate service delivery.
“I feel like with what just happened right now there will be changes, good changes.”
“I hope the new councillor we voted for will bring services to ward 3 because we’ve been neglected.”
Addressing the rally, EFF leader Julius Malema says this is confirmation that the party is growing in the North West.
“We’re very happy. This is a confirmation that EFF is growing and is going to take over North West, because the services in North West have collapsed. There’s no government. It was factionalism which destroyed the government of North West. So, the people of North West are now showing that they have had enough about (of) the corruption that is taking place in this province. So, this is a practical sign and evidence that EFF in North West is ready to govern.”
Malema elaborates in the tweet video below:

Free education
Meanwhile, Malema also called on for government to provide free education for university students.
He says South Africa is about to become a failed state.
“In 2024, you must be registered to vote. Whether you are only 16 years and above, go and register to vote. You must be registered so that you vote for a party that will restore the dignity of black people. 99% of white people always register to vote; that’s why DA always take number two because black people don’t go out in their numbers and vote.”
